Those thousands and thousands - billions even - of sun like stars out there in our own galaxy alone, to say nothing of the billions of other galaxies beyond that, ain't there just to give us something to look at at night.

I'd bet the house that there's plenty of life out there, intelligent life too, and in any direction you care to look.

Thing is, we'll never see it and they'll never see us... or each other.

The distances are just too damn great.
Meaning the time involved would probably render a species extinct by the time radiowaves etc ever reached us alerting us of their presence. The hard part is getting two species of intelligent life at roughly the same level of development in the same area... 10 million years either way which is a fraction of a microsecond in universe terms and they could live a galaxy across and never know it as the first might go extinct while the other is still borrowing for winter.
One of the surefire reasons I just can't believe in alien spaceships landing on earth without proof is just the sheer neatness of aliens only ever being ~100 years further ahead in technology than us. It's just an extra layer of improbability.
