site in multiple languages whats best: 1 domain or 1 for each countries tld?

i am begining a site in multiple langauges e.g. french, english, russian.

what are the upsides & downsides to putting them all on the .com
and what are the upsides & downsides to putting them all on their own tld. e.g. .fr .co.uk .e.g.

first of all .com saves time registering and working on multiple domains, however would search egines recognise to be able to send one .html file english traffic and one .html file french traffic that are in the same directory?

would it therefore be best to to france.xxx.com and structure them like that? would that work?
quick thinking shows that the method of france.xxx.com would be best.

do you agree, thoughts and opinions?
