When Maintaining fat loss (the majority of your life after losing weight):
Intense exercise is key
Cardio serves as benefit for heart mainly
When losing fat:
Cardio is key for losing fat
Intense exercise is important as well to maintain existing muscle - prevent your weight loss from coming from muscle loss as much as possible, since you are going to need to put the muscle back when you are done losing the fat, you'd be best served to minimize this loss.
I'm only going back and forth because most people have no idea at all about how to maintain a proper diet+exercise routine, and your post made it seem like "just walking" was pointless - it isn't, it's just part of an overall routine.
