If you take the recent history for every cure you have a new disease that's uncurable and even people live longer they suffer from more and more civilisation diseases, there is more insanity and psycho cases than ever and mankind is overally not in the best shape.
A bit off topic: I actually studied this a bit while I did my biomedical engeneering courses.
At the end, I am convinced that the nature would do a serious mistake keeping human from extinction for too long,
Paraphrasing the words of my favourite author Oscar Wilde - whoever created human they sure overestimated themselves and things got seriously out of hand.
Thanks to the fact there is so much self destruction around and that the human race and nature doesn't really evolve anywhere for a while, it won't be such a burden, although the "green" initiatives will surely continue to be more and more important and popular tool to get more and more voters.
