The herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 is the cause of most cold sores. It is very common and in Canada they estimate that approximately 60% of the population has it. Just because someone has cold sores does not mean that they will have genital herpes. They estimate that 20% of adults have genital herpes.
Herpes needs to get under the skin to infect you that is why it likes the genitals and area around the mouth were the skin changes to mucous membrane.
