Don't use the LED, shoot the smallest resolution you can that's still big enough for what you want (always shoot at least a BIT bigger than the final image you want, though). I used Olympus C-line cameras (C-2020, C-3000, C-3040, and C-4040) for three years, and the batteries, if freshly charged, would get me through an entire 300-photo shoot. You must be doing something wrong.
As for the LED, the Olympus would give me about a 5-second look at the shot after the shot was taken, then it would switch off. I'm sure had I used the LED to frame the shots and left it on all the time, it would have chewed up the batteries like mad.
