Becky they call those "sequences" in Adobe Premiere Pro, and I believe they are called the same thing in Apple's Final Cut Pro. You capture the footage once and all the clips reside in a bin or a folder and then you can have multiple sequences each with it's own timeline with different edits of the same raw footage. This feature is standard in newer versions of most modern full featured editing programs.
