The model of "All the content you can download and keep for $29.95" seemed to work in the days when there was so much money to be made it didn't matter. But the market is mature now and maybe a new model is needed.

I know some of the sites I like have no streaming option and I WISH they did. I hate downloading the videos, especially when they are broken up. It's a huge pain in the ass.

But I think some people are thinking you just switch to no-downloads overnight so when all your members log on they are shocked and cancel. Obviously, you don't do it like that. First, run the streaming parallel with the download option so surfers get a taste of the instant viewing. Then have a few updates here and there with no download option and gauge the response. Then make the download page a separate page you have to click a few links to get to and make it sort of a pain to navigate. So basically you phase out the download option without actually saying so. Just like every other industry does when they phase something out. I bet eventually you could do away with the downloading all together with minimal pain.
