You are right, most of the big VOD sites take way too huge a percentage, but it's all their traffic so what can you do? Just submit to all of them and hopefully combined between the biggest four or five popular VOD sites it works out to halfway decent money.
If you have your own traffic though, it's foolish to settle for less than everything minus c.c. processing- in other words 85% or more. I am looking into setting up my own VOD solution to sell my own videos & clips, with this
http://phantomflicks.com software which looks pretty nifty and inexpensive too. I have only seen a very few sites using it, but it's way cheaper than the next available solution and probably real easy to install with no minimums involved.
