Military personal during war, bond with anything.. if they feel a tree cares about them for 1 micro second, that tree becomes a symbol of faith/love for them, when they have no other warmth around them. This is why brotherhood and religion is so strong for active Military. Since they can count on the brotherhood, the bond stays forever, and since they can't rely on God, they loose faith when they return home.
You don't have to try and justify his actions, you can only see a few seconds of what's going on and you try to thin slice what is going through a persons mind and/or reasoning when you aren't in and have never been in a related situation.
If you have been shot at and/or killed a few humans - your soul is dark inside. If you have lost all love for own self, if you already think you are dead... your mind is gone. These guys don't think about what they are doing - they just kill - exactly what they are trained to do.
If you want to hate, hate the Gov for producing mindless, heartless, killing machines that keep your freedom free.

man that's so much bullshit... I was in the Army. Cruelty to helpless animals or people isn't tolerated or encouraged in the military any more than it is anywhere else, and anyone who does this shit is a sociopath.
Just like in real life, in the military the people who do this kind of shit are usually the dumbest, most avoided, most disliked people in the unit, and the military, again like real life, is better off as a whole getting rid of thier stupid sadistic asses.
You watch too many goddam war movies, son...
