That fight was interesting in that I had a good feeling that Kimbo was going to loose and maybe become a better fighter for it. After the two fights before it were stopped the way they were I started thinking this is starting to seem scripted. I really don't think that these are works, since punches and kicks are involved and you really can't control getting rocked or not. But I do feel that the judges and refs were potentially paid off or at least heavily encouraged to lean one way or the other.
As far as the Shaws are concerned. When I saw the kid on Inside MMA I immediately thought "here is a kid that will tell you anything you want to hear to make an extra buck".
Now, as far as Kimbo being the face of EliteXC, it really only helps them in the short term because he is not going to last if they ever bring in some decent fighters. Hell, Big Foot Silva would own Kimbo 9 times out of 10. Sure it's his 4th fight, but that doesn't really matter when he is the poster boy for the organization. He needs to be the best. In the UFC they have Huerta (just one example) who got the cover of SI (I think it was SI) and people started questioning him because he was fighting lesser fighters, etc. Then he went to war with Guida and proved that he should be among the elite in the devision. Kimbo is still a long way off and it's in the least competitive division. So, get ready to see Kimbo fighting cans for the next few years before he is good enough to fight the elite of the division.
So what does this mean for EliteXC? They are there to make money not help the sport. I think that was pretty clear on Saturday. At least Dana White is trying to propel the sport into mainstream by legitimizing it as opposed to shoving some internet sensation down peoples throats. What we saw was the lowest common denominator in the sport.
We can only hope that the next CBS card will be a little more professional and less like the shit show we witnessed on the weekend.
And good for James to speak his mind and not come off like Tito would. That's the most professional thing to come out of this whole thing, lol.
