Because I have never met a person who home schooled their kid that was half normal.
My two year old goes to daycare and he learns tons of stuff from the social interaction with the other little suckers there, things he might not learn if he was home all the time.
Life is a social and collaborative thing. If my two year old is inspired by such an environment, how cruel is it to prevent an 8 or 13 year old from this learning experience.
Guess what there are vending machines at Harvard too, maybe I should advise the parents of those students to teach their kids rocket science at home instead.
