The Bull Moose party screwes taft out of 2nd term. Southern Dems starting the American Independance Party in 1968 allowed Nixon to win. So yes 3rd party candidates have made differences.
I would state that it's real hard for a 3rd party to win anything because the two parties in power have made the rules so fucking difficult for them that they can't get a foothold. It's tough to get on all the ballots in a general election. They are also excluded from all debates and don't get public funding.

In any event, I've donated to the Libertarian Party for the past few years. I may vote Barr in the general since I'm in Illinois and my vote for President won't count for much (although I'd have preferred a different candidate for that party). There are some ideas I disagree with them on, but I do hope that libertarian viewpoints start getting brought back into national politics. It's the one reason I was in favor of Ron Paul getting so much attention. Government needs to stay out of our lives and we need to stop wasting so much fucking money.
