The jews were chasing jesus all throughout the gospel of john. At the end, the jews bribed judas to turn him over. Judas and the jews (not romans) arrested jesus and took him to the pontius pilate, the roman governor.
Pilate looked at jesus and said he saw no crime committed. The angry mob of jews insisted he crucify him. Pilate told the mob to release jesus, they chose to release barabas, a theif, instead.
Pilate said "let the blood be on your hands and those of your children" to the jews. The romans then executed him under the watchful eye of the jews.
Jesus is so forgiving he said "father, please forgive these men, for they know not what they do." to the jews as they were leading him away to be killed.
