Someone who is an atheist or a-theist, is basically a non theist i.e. does not hold a belief in theism. Take careful note that in no way does this mean that an atheist DENIES the existence of god. Of course, some atheists might try to and some refer to this as "strong" athiesm but atheism in its pure form is just non theism.
a-theism deals with belief
a-gnosticism deals with knowledge.
They are actually complementary positions.

If you do not understand the close relationship between knowledge and belief... well, let me put it this way. If you feel you cannot *know* about something, what do you believe about that thing? Agnosticm has the answer to that worked out. So do people who understand it.
