Back in the 80s Steve thought his OS was better. maybe it was maybe not not important. The thing is he COULD have made his OS available to ALL computer companies like MS did. he though that since his OS was better, by keeping it exclusive to Apple he'd sell more Apple's because people though that more highly of his OS. You'd think after 25 years later he'd learned that this is not the case. Had he really been smart not only would his OS be a MUCH higher % of the market MS might not even be around or perhaps it may have led to MS not being so complacent and build a better product. If Jobs is REALLY concerned about consumers having the BEST products he wouldn't make them so proprietary.
As an aside IBM was also as stupid as Jobs as they hired Gates to write the OS for IBM computers. They thought everyone would buy IBMs no matter what because of the name and the OS didn't really matter so they let Gates have the rights to the OS to sell to whomever he wanted. They failed to realize if companies A, B and C computers had the same OS as an IBM and they were cheaper, people would start buying computers from companies A, B and C instead of IBM.

They are repeating the exact same mistake with the iPhone. Sure the SDK is open but it doesn't mean shit because you can't actually put it on your own phone without their permission and you can only sell through them and they get to say if you can sell it.
