This is correct for automatic transmissions,
The reason is so your "drive wheels" do not spin the drive shaft or trans-axles. If you do this on an automatic transmission it could damage the torque converter without the engine running because transmission hydraulic fluid is not being circulated.
With a standard transmission you should be fine.
