The answer is simple. A lot of porn consumers just don't want to get involved with recurring billing. They just want what they want, one or more individual clips that strike their fancy based on the screen caps or the text descriptions. It doesn't matter that they could be downloading a lot more content for the same price if they joined a site as a member. They are happy to pay $5 or even $9 for five to nine minute segment, 1/5th of scene. I am successfully selling video clips in standard definition at 320x240 and some customers are even willing to pay $20-$30 for a single 30 minute sex scene! Given the relatively tiny amount of traffic my stores get now I have to say the conversion rate is pretty good. I think the clips model is going to be more and more popular the future.
