A 94-year-old man was taken into custody after he allegedly shot and killed his landlord Thursday night and holed up in his East Oakland home for several hours, police said.
Frank Spillman, who was captured after being stunned with a Taser gun, is one of the oldest homicide suspects ever in the Bay Area.
Police said he was upset that his landlord, 64-year-old Kulbushan Gupta, planned to evict him, so he fired several shots at Gupta about 7:30 p.m. at his home at 4108 East 12th St.
Gupta was hit once, staggered to an adjacent parking lot and collapsed, police said. He was pronounced dead about three hours later at Highland Hospital in Oakland.
Spillman stayed in the home and refused to surrender, prompting police to call in the SWAT team and negotiators, authorities said.
Officers tried for several hours to get him to come out. At one point, Spillman said he would lay down his gun on the porch, but he never did so, police said.
About 11 p.m., police distracted Spillman, then hit him with a stun gun through a window. He was taken to Highland Hospital for observation and was to be interviewed by homicide investigators.
