I'm also considering a little sign near my navigator mount saying "GPS navigator is NOT stored in the car"
Apparently those mounts are a magnet for smash and grab thieves, even if the device can't be seen there's a good chance it's in the glove box or somewhere inside the car.
Another idea: an alarm that can be installed inside the petrol door area that sounds if not deactivated
