I don't own a gun, and don't forsee ever owning a gun in the future. I do occasionally go to the shooting range, rent a Glock and have fun spending the day shooting at cut-outs of Osama Bin Laden and Yasir Arafat. But, the reason I don't have a gun is that I don't live anywhere where I fear for my safety and I don't see the need for me to own one merely for sport. That being said, I do support the right of other people to own guns.
What do you think would happen if you banned guns in America tomorrow? Law abiding citizens would be disarmed, while criminals would continue to bear arms. The amount of effort expended by the anti-gun left lobbying against guns would be far better served by educating people on how to properly use them. As MCsteve-matrix said "too many stupid people purchase guns without learning how to properly use them."
There are plenty of other countries with high gun ownership, Switzerland, Canada, Israel, etc., but have minimal gun violence.
The solution to addressing gun violence is not by banning them (aren't most illicit drugs illegal? has prohibition solved the drug problem?). The solution is to find ways reduce gun violence within the framework of the constitution.
