As for Avril herself, she does the job, pop singers don't need great voices. She has the voice that fits her music perfectly. She sounded like shit tonight performing live but I've seen her on AOL doing an acoustic session and she has a nice passable voice for a teenaged girl. She could be in 'Annie' or any of those type of Broadway musicals, it's that type of voice. She got lucky, somebody saw the raw material to create Sk8Ter GRRL, and a year later she is the most famous Canadian on the planet.
I didn't listen to her live tonight, but I've heard her live in the past - she can't sing. She's flat all over the place on her own damn song. There was obviously some serious "SnapTune (tm)" action going on in that studio.
