Their's no way even the stupidest wife would ask you to stop earning, IF you are earning.

I disagree, sometimes morals override the importance of money. For example, if you could double your income by spamming porn but you knew that at least 10% was arriving in children's mailboxes, would you continue doing it?
Note this is not directed specifically at you. It's a fairly extreme example, and purely ficticious, but the point is that some people's partners cannot be sold out, so to speak.
