That's actually not how it was constructed, as it it loops.

Tiles were drawn as follows
Large rectangle, with the middle missing
and smaller rectangle, that fitted into the middle
So you'd be zooming towards the smaller tile, when it hit the size boundry, it'd swap w/ the larger, and the next smaller tile would fit in.
It was a collaboration of multiple artists making their tiles seamless.
