I totally agree, and I do promote many sites. My point is, it sucks when any of them decide to stop doing their jobs and I loss all my hard earned work sending them members in the first place. It would be better to only promote those sites whichare known to be in this for the 'long haul' and therefor I know my investment is a good one.

I agree entirely. To be honest these days I mainly push either my own stuff, people I both know and trust or companies that have been around forever and look like being here when the world ends.
However, like any business you take risks. The trick is simply to work in a way that makes any risk acceptable even if the outcome is bad. If you don't like or can't handle the risk factor of being your own boss then the suit and tie are a calling...
