I am so torn by this woman... I really can't figure out if she's being genuine or if she's just an attention whore.
One the one hand, she is an inspiration and has done a LOT for Autism Awareness in general. She's made great progress with her own child and has been in the media a lot making sure that people are aware of what's going on.
On the other hand, she's taken it upon herself to start this crusade based on what she thinks and not based on real scientific conclusions. Yes, she has done her homework and gotten a lot of facts and figures but still... there's no "conclusions" in any it. And she gets so worked up that she can't keep her ass in her seat when anyone may not agree with her research.
This march on the whitehouse is both great and also... well, a lot of chest pounding. It's not a "We're going to march" stance, it's a "Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey are leading a march" movement. If this was really about Autism, it wouldn't be so much about her or Jim Carrey. But every time I've heard her mention it, I've her and his name too. She's not united with parents of Autism, she's trying to lead them so she gets the attention.
It's great that she's pushing hard regardless of it all, as it is forcing doctors to take a second, third and fourth look into the vaccines. Which is great for everyone. There's nothing wrong with doing more checking into what is and isn't safe. I just wish she could be pushing for more testing... not pushing for people to believe that she's right when in reality she just simply can't know for sure.
I had no idea that children in the US get that many vaccinations. That's WAY more than we do in Canada. And you know what, our children get Autism too. Other countries have less vaccinations that we do and their children get Autism. Some countries don't immunize their children at all. Some of them have Autism as well.
Does it increase the risk? Perhaps. But it doesn't cause it. And it's for that reason that I hate that she's on such a crusade with this. I can understand her need to find the cause, to find a cure. I feel the same way. But this isn't about me. And it isn't about her.
In the end, her taking it too far will be good for awareness in general and in further studies, but it is still her taking it too far.
Sorry my response ended up being so long. It's a debate topic, one which I debate with myself on!
And I feel strongly about it.
