I think that's true by old standards, but the now the Republican party is much more toward the center than they were. They are no longer pushing State's rights and no longer are about smaller government and less spending.
Democrats are not much like old school Democrats either. Decades ago, it was Democrats who pushed for war while Republicans wanted isolation. They have also moved much farther to the center on economic issues than they previously were.
I guess I'm saying that the two parties don't really differ much. They throw their "loyal constituents" a bone on some fringe social issues that don't matter and play the game the same way. Democrats were elected in 2006 when people wanted change. They didn't get that. It's a one party system more or less.
