Similar story in Australia, for some people they end up making more money by pushing out babies and sitting at home on welfware. For starters there's a one-off payment of about $5000 !! (may have gone up by now, it will rise and cap at $8k) for every baby born. Then there's single mothers pension, 30% child care rebates, another child care copayment (centre charges $60 a day, the parents pay about $3 with the balance covered by the govt... the rebate would pull that down to $2!), some sort of child allowance that continues until they're 16, and probably a heap more that I don't know about. You can literally live off the system, but it's a fucked up life for your kids.
