Aphrodite was known for wreaking havoc in the lives of those who disrespected her--generally those who considered themselves too "upright" to be associated with the values she represented. Generally, Aphrodite punished these "upstanding citizens" by causing them to fall into whatever sexual practice was considered the most perverse by the society in which they were so heavily invested.
If people had the wisdom to demonstrate more reverence for Aphrodite, they'd have much less to fear from their own desire.
