You are correct, although London is not really best place to get a curry in England. Leeds / Birmingham are great.
I have tried and failed to get a decent curry in both US and Canada tons of times and it just never works out. The best effort was on the outskirts of Boston, at least they had popadums.
I have a theory that when the English gave up rule of India they sent all the talented chefs home, and sent anyone who can drive and stink up a cab to North America.
