I prefer Skype over ICQ cause:
- unlimited contacts per account. ICQ has limit.
- better emoticons
- no annoying guitar riff everytime someone has a birthday
- Skype supports multi-chat with more than one party
- Great way to send large files
- Unlike ICQ, sound alerts for IM are bearable

Furthermore, Skype In gives you a virtual presence anywhere. I have a US San Fransisco number that routes to me here in Spain.
