That's basically what it boils down to. It's not about "equality". I have arms and I can definitely open my own doors, but it's more a sign of good manners, upbringing, and respect. I also wouldn't refuse to date someone if they didn't do it.
My dad always opened doors and pulled out chairs for any/all females with him. And he even stood if a female got up from the table. I will admit I'm not big on the standing thing, and if we're getting out of the car I'm probably going to go ahead and get out instead of waiting for someone to walk around. Although I have waited before just to see what would happen.
But it's always nice to see a guy who opens the car door for you first, or pulls out your chair at a restaurant and waits for you to sit. And it doesn't necessarily depend on upbringing. I know guys from shitty families who still had good manners. If I had a son I'd definitely teach him about the door/chair thing.
