what you have to remember is that the hippies themselves never really made it into position of power without first selling out their ideals.
they were never able to properly mesh their beliefs with mainstream american culture.
the people running the country now, were the same people that hated hippies back in the 60's. the ideals of their movement were never perpetuated into society.
the one thing they never understood, is that if you truly want to change america, you can't do it by being ostentatious or offensive. you need to work within the political structure already set in place, or else you are branded as a freak and an outcast, and your views are not taken seriously.
