I've seen some numbers that tell a much different story. The key when using sponsor or amateur content, is to custom create the clips. Taking 20 second sponsor provided clips will not do the job, but working deals with sponsors to use 1:30 to 2 minute clips can be a success.
As far as grabbing all of the traffic... Who needs it all? If done right, done legally, and done with giving JUST enough for the surfer to return, the joins and traffic will be there. Sure the other sites may get more in volume, but has a webmaster ever needed to have his sites getting the
MOST traffic to make a great profit? No. As long as he/she can control a nice chunk, and knows what their surfers want, he/she will be a success.
I don't need a 2 million hit video site. If I can hit 100-200k a day and I know what will keep them buying, I can make a nice profit. There is plenty of room in the water for quite a few fish.
