I live in Oregon so it wasn't a big shock to me, but I didn't realize there were that few black people. The small town I grew up in had about 3,000 people. The high school also serviced several smaller surrounding towns and had around 600 students total. In four years we had one black kid and he only lasted about one semester. He was cool and nobody really gave him shit, but his family moved into town and back out pretty quickly.
I would imagine almost all of those black people are located within a few square miles in North Portland. I would guess most of the people in my state have zero exposure to black people. I didn't have a meaningful conversation with a black person until I was 21 years old. Not because of racism, just because there are not a lot of black people around and I didn't go to the same places as they did.
