I got the movie was trying to say, but I didn't really like it. They basically play it out for 3/4 with a very straightforward crime caper -- and an extremely involving one at that --- then there's a thematic re-focusing of the entire film. The Coen brothers are basically saying, "hey, the movie's really about this.."

Then we get the long-ass ruminations by two old men, dropping all the deep shit on us. It wasn't really important what happened to Josh Brolin, although I sure as fuck would have liked to see how everything played out, instead of pulling the rug out from under me.

I'm all for a thoughtful, slow film, but don't set me up with a totally different movie at the outset. That's the coen brothers for ya.
