Hard food is very good for your cat's teeth, and health. No! The stuff does not make them obese. (And, not all hard food is cheap!)
Over eating, and ingesting high (crude) fat foods do!
I suggest a combination of both, once and a while. Otherwise, I'd only give her/him hard food. Once a day, I'd add a half of a teaspoon of soft to some hard food, and mix them together. Let it stand for 5-minutes, or longer, so the hard stuff absorbs the juices and flavour. This will also help teach her/him some control.
Also, try switching your hard food. I highly recommend Whiskas hard food. I have yet to see a cat refuse it's low (crude) fat formula. Since your kitty is not over-weight, try the Lamb flavour. I recommended this to all my friends (with cats) and the thanked me for it.
Hope it helps.
P.S. A lot of the time cat's whine when they want attention. No offense, but do you actually spend a fair amount of time with your kitty? Sitting down for an hour plus, with her/him on your lap, or playing with a string, or combing him more her? Often, cat's (and dog's) get lonely for attention, and when they want it (attention) they think of the first place where they see you (at the diner plate).
