Why the fuck do dealers pull this shit? Not once have I had a straight talking saleman work with me. These days are differnet; I can afford to buy nearly any car I want. This is what I do.
1) If your trading in a car, feel free to turn in your car keys like it's no big deal. However, make sure you have your spair keys with you.
2) Get your own financing before you walk into the dealership. And don't tell them about it until the last possible moment, once you've signed their little agreement sheet.
3) If they give you any flack at all, walk out. They'll call you the following day. Trust me, they'll call you.
4) Don't wait around until the "paperwork is done". Once everything is agreed upon say "okay, call my cell when your ready to have the paperwork signed" and then leave. Don't give them the chance to haggle with you last moment.
The last time I bought a car it was comical. Everything was all set and then they pulled some crap on me, and I just walked. They had my car already; I just pulled out the spairs. They called me shortly after I got home. Once we had agreed to the deal I told them I had my own financing which pissed them off for some reason. The rate was much lower than what they were offerring me.
After we agreed on everything I told them to call me when the paperwork was done. When I did come back to sign the paperwork they had changed a few things, and I told them to fix it and call me when that was done. They were threatening me with "some guy is coming in to look at the car" and I'm like "Good, maybe he can buy it from you then".
I had a 2004 Mach 1 I was trading in; It was paid for. It was a good car, low mileage, in good condition. I was trading it in on a 2004 Mustang Cobra, low mileage, good condiation. What they couldn't figure out was that I was pretty happy with my current car, and didn't want the new one all that bad.
