Julius Caesar was 41 when he became Proconsul in Gaul, and began to subdue all of Gaul. He had very limited millitary experience before that, nobody could have reasonably expected him to be such a brilliant general before he started waging wars. Not to mention the Roman public didn't blink and eye when he slaughtered entire populations or sold them in to slavery when they rebeled. Times have changed.
