Let's see, as I recall Cadillac paid Led Zeppelin $100 million to use their music, and Bob Seger probably made a small mint from Chevy using his "Like A Rock" song in their commercials for the better part of 10 years.
Major lawsuits and settlements have resulted from people trying to alter songs slightly, so most people in commercial TV are smart enough to strike an agreement and pay licensing fees/royalties for using copyrighted music.
