no, no it's not... soccer is a long way down the line in terms of the place it holds in australia.. a lot of people play it.. but as a fitness activity, not dreaming to represent their country to the accolades of their fellow australians.. as no one cares about it.
I'll agree that if we start winning things will change, but right now soccer is like hockey and netball. something a lot of kids do to to be fit and sporty but you only hear about at the world cup or maybe the olympics. It's still a foreign sport with not a lot of local support. The only people into it as a cultural sport are immigrants from soccer countries!!!!! italians that stay up till 3am to catch stuff on SBS and whatnot.
They're forever talking about why soccer isn't big here even though it's played a lot, especially by kids.. it just isn't part of our sporting culture..
I'd prefer we were as soccer mad as we are or instead of cricket.. I actually like soccer.
Still doesn't take away from the jokes about australians becoming soccer experts at world cup time and then forgetting about it for the next four years.
