It's fairly common for tools to nuke /tmp; especally on FreeBSD.
Have them move the socket to /var/tmp via my.cnf, and edit the path in php.ini, accordingly. That's most likely the culprit.

you dont think it could be because the dns was changed today and it takes 24/48 hours to change for everyone?
The problem you suggested above, if the tools did nuke /tmp wouldnt everybody not be able to see it?
