A roll is only 24 or 36 frames, most people can peel that off in a heartbeat on a digital. The motivation behind is to make you think heavily on the shot before you take it, and to develop the 'frame' in your head before you shoot.
That way, you can effectively walk around composing the photos in your head, and then just plonk down the camera, flick the settings and open the shutter
