If you have backups and are copying to a new drive make sure you don't let the drive get to hot or run it for too long. I've had really huge drives that I tried to consolidate to the 1.5 TB drives and ran one of the USB drives for 26 hours straight copying files and it died. Never had a problem with the drive before. It just died mid copying. Let it cool down and give it a break every now and then.

Tip: if you use NT backup (bundled with XP) right clicking on the title bar will bring up the minimize/maximise/close options which
pauses the backup.
A full backup of my data takes in excess of 12 hours so I do this occasionally. I can walk away after the right click since the screen saver will trigger in 20 mins, "removing" the click dialog and resuming the backup.
I should add that even though my drives work hard when they're backing up, they do have a 120mm fan directly in front of them.
