I don't think I ever heard that, so don't know if there's any truth to it. I don't see any mention of it in his wiki page:

I did like several of his movies from back in the day. White Line Fever comes to mind, Damnation Alley rocked.
Another has been actor that comes to mind....
Dirk Bennedict.
The guy was at the top of his game with the old Battlestar Galactica and then the A Team, but through the 90's on up he's virtually off the radar.
