He's already protected against fraudulent charges per his contract with AMEX, no? I don't see a reason to pay for something else.

If he's worried about identity theft he can put a lock on his credit reports for free if someone's trying to get more credit using his info.
Amex protected him from the charges and is going to issue him a new card with a new number.
