They were both great and innovative games, but Starcraft was far from a "clone" as it introduced several new RTS concepts not seen before its time.
Three teams... each with entirely different modes of combat but equally balanced. Nothing like that existed before. Pre-Starcraft, it was all pretty much cookie-cutter from team to team with different unit skins or slight variations on the stats.
Not to mention the User editor and ability to install different Map Settings into games (allowing for games such as Starcraft Risk, Chess, WW2 scenario maps, etc) was unlike anything before.
I love Warcraft 2 just as much as any oldschool gamer - maybe more... but Starcraft is a whole lot more than its clone - and a game I still occasionally play today.
