I had one of my good buddies do that about 5 years ago now, quit his job, sold/gave/threw away all of his belongings and moved to Australia. It took about 2 years to go through the process of becoming a citizen or to get landed immigrant status that would enable him to work full time and not have to leave the country every six months for 48 hours.
During that time he was on a student visa took some courses and worked part time. Once he got the OK that he was able to stay permanently he finished his schooling and bought a house. Now he is a personal trainer making really good money, he owns 2 houses and golfs or surfs daily. He really loves it there.
I had planned on going with him or shortly there after. Maybe not permanently but for at least a year. Unfortunately some things had come up that prevented me from going, although I would still really like to go there in the near future.
