Though I am doubtful, as producers usually produce then move on and aren't much interested in keeping up with sales figures until nomination time.
You sure it was the producer? Generally speaking, it would be the promo reps from the record company.
I did this for a while, but it was a few years ago.
Congrats though, major accomplishment.
