If you really want to squeeze a design down as far as file size, do this.
Some images will be smaller in jpeg and some in gif format. A basic rule to go by is graphics of text, are smaller as gif, photo graphics are smaller as jpeg (not always, but just a rough guide, you'll have to look at the file output size to really know). If you are slicing a large image up into small pieces, try making some of the slices gif, and some jpeg, depending on what type of graphics are in each sliced area.
